A truly remarkable property of great elegance and discretion, featuring only 12 suites- but definitely not for nouveau-riche hedonists seeking the Four Seasons ultra-precise variety of accommodation. Heads of state, diplomats and luminaries stay here, and recognize the outstanding quality that surrounds them, which may look old to some, but only because it is, and only in the best sense of the word. Florence is old, and the palazzo has been there since the 1500s, first as an opulent residence, later as a singular repository of fine antiques. You will need to accept details like an ancient cage elevator that immediately plunges you into local speed, which is easygoing and assured. You may stumble upon Roman antiquities in the overgrown courtyard, or unearth vintage illustrated Italian bookcovers from the 50s on a shelf in the spacious, vaulted library. At some point you will need to succumb to a polite game of billiards on a red felt table. The staff believes a ghost inhabits the place; more than one person has reported hearing a baby crying in the otherwise empty kitchen. There are a lot of stairs: in the entryway, between floors, and most precipitously (but well worth the Olympian effort) up to the rooftop terrace, reached by a hearty climb via a narrow series of staircases, up to the highest point for blocks around, where you are rewarded with comfortable seating and views across tile roofs on all sides, where diving swallows swoop by as you sip your prosecco and dream of Bernini. At 5:45pm church bells from all corners of the city take off, and you are surrounded by harmonious ringing. The terrace is a place you will want to visit every day. It has unforgettable vistas and an amiable barman. This is an authentic residence of great distinction, private, small, historic, exclusive- yet it seems to be family-friendly. You will find over-the-top rooms garlanded in art, massive murals, elegant sleeping arrangements and 20’ high ceilings, gold, cream, scarlet, marble top tables, brocade in abundance. Bathrooms have all been redone in fine tile and marble, and are modern, spacious and embellished with Bulgari amenities. The hotel boasts an optimal location at the SW corner of the city, on the other side of the Arno, far enough away from the bustling city center to give a neighborhood feel, yet close as a 10-15 minute walk to the humming commercial district. A small team keeps Palazzo Magnani Feroni running efficiently, with great sensitivity to guests, and a reserved demeanor appropriate to such a unique place. You can expect a complete package of top-notch amenities, bar and dining options, a private garage, not to mention direct internet access in every suite. The price point is high (€300-800/night in high season), but the value proposition is a good one. This luxury property delivers on its promise of privacy, elegance, discretion, and classical style much like its city, which itself is more like a living museum.
