The location of this friendly little Pension run by two sisters is superb: it is in the centre of Florence - in a pedestrian area - just 80 meters from the Uffizi Gallery and the Old Bridge. There are no cars or traffic, but the front door may be reached by taxi. It is an area with lots of cafes and restaurants (breakfast is not served at the inn but there are many small restaurants and cafes in the area). There is a common kitchen area where you may prepare a complimentary cup of tea, chocolate or coffee and snacks. Each room is different and all are spacious, romantic and bright. The decor is in pastel colours, furnished with sophisticated hand-decorated pieces in 18th century Venetian style. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom with white, green and grey marble, and rooms have double windows, air conditioning, satellite TV, mini-bar, telephone, internet plug. The difference between the double superior room and double standard room is only the view. The superior rooms have lovely views, some of the tower of Palazzo Vecchio, Orsanmichele Church and a characteristic florentine old market, located in the famous 16th century Loggia del Mercato Nuovo. Others face the medieval area of Florence next to the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa. The standard rooms have street views. There is no 24 hours reception or room service but the sisters are always at hand to help you to reserve tickets for the museums, give suggestions for restaurants and tours. This is a place where you will feel totally independent, having your own key to get in and out of the building. The rooms are on the fourth floor and there is an elevator but there are 21 stairs to reach the lift from the main front door on the road. The rest of the building has only private apartments and the area is safe and quiet.

We arrived puncually by train from Ravenna and Anna was there with a ready spacious triple room and even readier smile. We knew about the 21 steps up from the street to the lift, but steps off the street are common in areas that used to flood. From the lift there are another 6 steps into the main door of the Relais. Our 85-year-old mother managed them all fine holding the railings. The hallways are rather plain, but once inside the Relais, you are in a warm, clean and VERY elegant environment. The rooms have quiet, modern air conditioning that will convert to either fan or heat as well. Anna gave us a map with all the local ammenities already marked. From restaurants to post office to taxis. So, I had spent a euro far a map at the tourist office in the train station needlessly. Location was very central to all main sites of interest. We made do in the "tea room" supplementing the coffee, tea and cakes, with some fruit for our breakfast. There is a small fridge in the rooms stocked with water. There are new flat screen TVs which have Skye TV so we could get CNN. Our bathroom seemed newly remodelled, very clean, with plenty of soap and towels. We can recommend a good restaurant just a couple of blocks toward the river and around the corner. Called "Il Desco." A little out of the main drag/squares, but they try hard and the food was delicious and reasonable. You feel that it is an old house set in part of the ancient city walls.

Several things. The staff was very helpful . They have a lovely kitchen for tea and snacks. I loved the muted colors, and the window trimmings! Also, I was ill the first day, so I had access to tea 24/7 and a great view of the markets buzzing under me when I was awake. The location is terrific!!

No larger signage to find the place. It would be easier to list it as next to The Old Stove, a pub,or explain that you will find their sign on a brass wall plaque (no larger than 3-4 inches) next to a buzzer, along with other apartments in the building.
