Prices shown reflect complusory half board (breakfast and dinner included). 7 night minimum stay in August Hotel Stella Maris is located in the heart of Levanto, often a starting place for the Cinque Terre walk (the five fishing villages once reached only by sea). Levanto is a charming city with a faded past, but with spectacular surroundings where mountains cascade into the sea, and wild forests dot the landscape. The hotel is on the first floor of an 18th century palazzo, and has amazing high frescoed ceilings, panelled walls and antique furniture (all rooms ensuite, although the bathrooms are small). The rooms do not have view to the sea but it is only a two minute walk away. This is a very funky place with lots of glitz, red brocade, and over-the-top art deco decorations - with a cosy feeling. First impressions may be a little doubtful, but quickly one understands its main attraction is the owners, the Famiglia Italiani who will lavish attention on you. They speak little English (but members of the staff do speak good English) and will help you plan your day's excursions and Renza, a wonderful cook, will welcome you to true old-fashioned Italian cooking with an emphasis on seafood. All reservations are taken on the basis of half board (breakfast and dinner). This unusual little hotel has appeared in 'Best Loved Hotels of the World' - for its warm welcome - and hundreds of guests come back year after year. Try to get a room in the main hotel and not the annex, which is rather institutional.
